NINETEEN

It was after four-thirty when Jessica began making dinner for the second time that day and under rather more difficult circumstances given that the kitchen in which she was working was significantly less well equipped than her own. She was, however, smiling as she worked because she was cooking for someone special. Two very large steaks were sizzling along with some crushed garlic in a little olive oil in her best sauté pan with the lid off, while baby new potatoes were being gently steamed and asparagus tips were trimmed, coated in olive oil and waiting. The oven was on and ready but nothing was in it. When the steaks were sufficiently fried on both sides, she opened the other bottle of wine that she had bought earlier and poured a little into the pan before adding some black pepper, placing the lid on and turning the heat to its minimum setting. She removed the potatoes from the steamer, turning them onto a plate to dry in their own heat. Once ready, she coated them in olive oil and placed them on a baking tray along with the asparagus then she looked at the clock. She had never been present when Megan arrived home from work so she could only estimate the time at which she would walk through the door. When she felt there were fifteen minutes remaining, she placed the tray of vegetables in the oven and adjusted the temperature to a medium level, wanting the asparagus to cook, the potatoes to finish, and nothing to be overdone. A few moments later, she heard the key in the door.

'Jessica!' Megan called out, excited.

'Kitchen,' Jessica called in return, waiting with open arms and a ready smile.

The two women hugged enthusiastically before Megan managed to speak again.

'I saw your car outside. This is such a surprise and something smells really good.'

'Dinner is almost ready so go and get changed into something nice and then we can eat it and see if it tastes as good as it smells.'

'Okay. I won't be long then.'

While Megan did as she was asked, Jessica poured wine into two glasses and checked the clock. There were no timers on the oven so she needed to keep track of the time. When Megan returned, she looked even lovelier and Jessica urged her to sit at the table and try some wine.

'I hope you like this one. It's a favourite.'

Megan tasted it and nodded. 'Mmm it's lovely. How did you manage this?'

'I didn't. I just did it.'

'Aren't you supposed to be at home with dinner ready?'

'I am at home with dinner ready but I left a note and dinner in the oven at the other house.'

'Won't he go mad?'

'No idea. My phone hasn't rung yet so perhaps not. Anyway, we have more important things to worry about. Dinner is ready. You sit there while I take care of it.'

Jessica served the food onto two plates and placed one in front of her companion and kept the other for herself.
